Improved Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometer Method for Measuring Dissolved Methane Concentration and Methane Production Rate in a Large Shallow Lake

Natural water bodies, such as lakes, rivers, and oceans, are important sources of atmospheric methane (CH4). Therefore, quantitative accurate determination the dissolved CH4 concentration in is great significance for studying emissions providing an in-depth understanding carbon cycle. Headspace gas chromatography (HGC) traditional method measuring water. Despite its long success, it has a lot problems use, complex pretreatment measurement time, not suitable large number samples. In view these shortcomings, more convenient efficient based on membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) measurements was established. our study, standard curves showed that had high accuracy, both at low concentrations. After laboratory test, to evaluate sensitivity this method, samples were collected from shallow lake (Lake Taihu). Both HGC MIMS used determine compare two methods. The small difference obtained methods significant correlation between concentrations derived with those could replace natural waters. addition, we also measured sediment production rates three different areas Lake Taihu using incubation experiment. During experiment, accumulations observed, indicating source column. Our study concluded sufficient better alternative than owing capacity measure broad range values plus fact relatively easy use less manipulation
